What happened at the synod today (Oct. 6)? Review for us just what (Canadian) Archbishop (Paul-Andre) Durocher (of Quebec) said.
“Archbishop Durocher commented on No. 29 in the Synod document—the place of women in the Church. He made two very important and interrelated comments: 1) women should be included in Church governance; 2) women should be restored to the ordained diaconate. As a matter of fact, the only persons who can share governance or jurisdiction in the church are clerics, and the ordinary way of entering the clerical state is by ordination to the diaconate …”

The pastor of Star of the Sea parish in San Francisco, the Rev. Joseph Illo, recently decided to stop training girls as altar servers, reserving the role for boys. He explained that, among other things, serving at Mass is a preparation for priesthood — a male-only vocation.
“The decision to phase out girls is not only out of step with current Catholic teaching, it also risks triggering painful memories for many Catholic women, just as they were beginning to feel hopeful about their status in the church.”

Church needs more women theologians, their insights, pope says / Catholic News Service

Pope Francis said he was pleased that five of the 30 members of the International Theological Commission are women, but the body that advises the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, as well as the church in general, needs more women theologians.
“‘They are the strawberries on the cake, but there is need for more,’ the pope said Dec. 5 as he met the members, who were named to a five-year term in July.”

U.S. sisters’ apostolic visitation report to be released Dec. 16 / Global Sisters Report

The Vatican will be releasing the results of one of its controversial and contentious investigations of U.S. women religious at a press briefing in December, a priest who assists the Vatican’s press office has said.
“Basilian Fr. Thomas Rosica, a Canadian who frequently helps the Vatican with English and French language press, said the Vatican will release a report on the investigation, known as an apostolic visitation, Dec. 16.
“The visitation, one of two separate investigations of U.S. women religious launched by different Vatican offices in recent years, sparked protest from both the women and lay people throughout the country who said it was based on unfair and unfounded judgments about the women’s lives.”

I read with interest the comments of Hugh McLoughlin (Letters, March 19) and was surprised that he asserted that Pope Francis does not lead an autocratic church. I have been a practicing Catholic since my birth 62 years ago and there is little in my experience to lead me to believe that it is anything other than autocratic.”

Women Resistant to Pope Francis’ Call for New Theology / National Catholic Reporter

Pope Francis is calling for a theology of women, but women in the church are resistant, calling instead for a theology of the laity.
“‘I want to talk about a theology of men and women together,’ lawyer and theologian Helen Alvare told NCR in an email.
“Alvare was a speaker at a recent Vatican symposium marking the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s 1988 apostolic letter Mulieris Dignitatem (“On the Dignity and Vocation of Women”). The Women’s Section of the Pontifical Council for the Laity hosted the symposium at the Vatican Oct. 10-12.
