After a string of sexual abuse accusations against priests and claims of a Catholic Church cover-up, Australia’s primer minister ordered on Nov. 5 a federal inquiry into allegations of child sex abuse in state and religious institutions and community groups, according to Associated Press. I wonder when the hierarchy will get the message that they would benefit greatly if more lay people were involved in the process of clergy selection, especially in the choice of bishops for dioceses. I’m not convinced that the bishops are doing all that is necessary to open their diocesan records of priests’ problem behavior. I pray for all of our church leaders for wisdom and courage to act properly.

Sadly, the sexual abuse of children by clergy / church personnel, the ensuing cover up by church officials, and victimization of the families of those abused closely parallel what happened in the US. So much unnecessary pain and such dishonesty inflicted by church offiials at the expense of the most vulnerable in our midst. Let these events remind us to be vigilent for any signs of grooming behavior by predators of children and embolden us to speak up when any suspicious behavior is noticed. We can create and maintain safe environments in our church for out children. It is up to us to insist and monitor.
