Convicted bishop is Catholic hierarchy’s elephant in the room – The Washington Post

“As the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops gathers for its annual fall meeting in Baltimore next week (Nov. 12-15), one of the biggest issues confronting the prelates won’t be on the formal agenda: how to cope with the re-election of a president whose policies many bishops denounced as unprecedented attacks on the Catholic Church.

“But another topic not on the agenda may loom just as large for a hierarchy hoping to wield influence in the public square. In September, Bishop Robert Finn of Missouri became the first bishop to be found guilty of covering up for a priest suspected of child abuse.”

What is the future of the liturgy? | USCatholic.org

What is the future of the liturgy? | USCatholic.org.

“Now is not an easy time to move forward with the liturgical renewal inspired by the Second Vatican Council. It may not seem like it at the parish level—unless, perhaps, your priest is recently ordained and pushing for Mass in Latin—but at official levels, mostly behind the scenes, the direction of Catholic liturgy since Vatican II is being called into question. Pope Benedict XVI and his coworkers in the Roman curia are steadily chipping away at guiding assumptions and familiar habits in postconciliar Catholic liturgy.

“It wasn’t supposed to turn out this way. Nearly 50 years ago the liturgy constitution of the Second Vatican Council called for a revision and simplification of the liturgy to enable active participation of the people. A massive liturgical reform, unprecedented in all of church history, was carried out under Italian Archbishop Annibale Bugnini, with input from numerous liturgical experts and approval of the world’s bishops. The “new liturgy” was accepted and welcomed by the vast majority of the clergy and faithful.” Fr. Anthony Ruff, O.S.B., in U.S. Catholic

Fr. Ruff teaches liturgy and liturgical music at St. John’s University School of Theology-Seminary in Collegeville, Minnesota. He blogs at PrayTellBlog.com and served on the International Commission on English. In February 2011, he withdrew from speaking engagements on the new Roman Missal because, he said in an open letter to U.S. Catholic bishops, “I have concluded that I cannot promote the new missal translation with integrity.”

Theologian’s disinvite linked to Vatican-supported group | National Catholic Reporter

Theologian’s disinvite linked to Vatican-supported group | National Catholic Reporter.

“The University of San Diego canceled a British theologian’s fellowship after an influential alumnus and a conservative watchdog group backed by a high-ranking Vatican official protested the appointment to the university’s board of trustees.

“Tina Beattie, a professor of Catholic studies at London’s University of Roehampton known for her work in contemporary ethical issues, was to have begun a two-month fellowship at the university Tuesday, Nov. 6.

“University president Mary Lyons informed Beattie that the fellowship had been canceled in an Oct. 27 letter.

“Thirteen members of the Catholic university’s theology and religious studies faculty and the 47,000-member American Association of University Professors raised concerns about the impact of Lyons’ action in separate letters.”

Can We Believe the Archdiocese? | Catholics4Change

Can We Believe the Archdiocese? | Catholics4Change.

“On October 15, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced its decision to restore Rev. Joseph DiGregorio to ministry, a priest credibly accused of the sexual exploitation of a minor. It did so while releasing as little information as possible,” Sister Maureen Turlish.

New sex-abuse charges put institutional leaders on notice

“Surely that single verdict (Msgr. William Lynn convicted of endangering the welfare of a child), on that felonious charge, would embolden other prosecutors to hold other powerful decision-makers accountable. Even in cases where they were not charged with touching anyone. Even when the official had never met the victim.”

Monica Yant Kinney: New sex-abuse charges put institutional leaders on notice.

Financial Contributors Scotch Theologian’s Visiting Fellowship

Once again, a U.S. university has canceled a theologian’s appearance, further curtailing theological discussion. National Catholic Reporter reports that the, “University of San Diego has canceled a visiting fellowship for a British theologian less than two weeks before her scheduled arrival at the university because of pressure from financial contributors, according to a letter from the university’s president.”

NCR quotes Tina Beattie, a professor of Catholic studies at London’s University of Roehampton: “It’s unheard of, certainly in Britain, for a theologian in my position to feel threatened by this kind of action. It’s not about me; it’s about some change in the culture of the Catholic church that we should be very, very concerned about.”
