Francis wants more women theologians advising the CDF / Commonweal

In an interview with L’Osservatore Romano (not yet published in English), Cardinal Gerhard Müller, head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, revealed that Pope Francis has directed that more women be included in the Vatican’s international theological commission …

“According to (Cardinal Gerhard) Müller (head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith), the number will increase to ‘five or six,’ which ‘would be a significant increase,’ Tornielli points out …

“What kind of difference could that make? Well, imagine if the U.S. bishops’ conference committee on doctrine had sought out the input of some women theologians before expressing its alarm at Johnson’s not-very-radical thoughts on female images of God.”

The Vatican is investigating a Jesuit theologian from India for allegedly espousing unorthodox beliefs, raising new questions about whether Pope Francis — the first Jesuit pope — is in fact moving the Catholic Church in a new direction.

“News of the threatened censure of the Rev. Theologian’s disinvite linked to Vatican-supported group | National Catholic Reporter

Theologian’s disinvite linked to Vatican-supported group | National Catholic Reporter.

“The University of San Diego canceled a British theologian’s fellowship after an influential alumnus and a conservative watchdog group backed by a high-ranking Vatican official protested the appointment to the university’s board of trustees.

“Tina Beattie, a professor of Catholic studies at London’s University of Roehampton known for her work in contemporary ethical issues, was to have begun a two-month fellowship at the university Tuesday, Nov. 6.

“University president Mary Lyons informed Beattie that the fellowship had been canceled in an Oct. 27 letter.

“Thirteen members of the Catholic university’s theology and religious studies faculty and the 47,000-member American Association of University Professors raised concerns about the impact of Lyons’ action in separate letters.”
