Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley is banning an Austrian priest from speaking at a Catholic parish in Dedham because the priest advocates ordaining women and making celibacy optional, stances that place him in opposition to church teachings. The Rev. Helmut Schuller was invited to speak at St. Susanna Parish July 17 as part of a 15-city tour of the United States called ‘The Catholic Tipping Point: Conversations with Helmut Schuller,’ sponsored by a coalition of reform-minded Catholic organizations, including Voice of the Faithful, based in Needham.”

Sometimes a simple letter says it all. Fr. McLaughlin in the Letters to the Editor of The Boston Globe captures the absurdities we too often observe. He also highlights the reason VOTF is asking bishops to pursue a new pastoral provision that would allow married Catholic men the same access to the priesthood that married converts from other faith traditions can now pursue.

This is another example of the hierarchical thinking pattern. The bishops think that it’s okay to prevent individuals from speaking on “Church” property without considering that the Churches were built with and are being maintained by the hard earned dollars of the parishioners. Not to mention that there is no “danger” in listening to an exchange of ideas. Forbidding such dialogue is a sign of fear that change may be productive. And, p.s. this is the U.S. and we do value freedom of speech.
