First U.S. Bishop Charged in Clergy Sexual Abuse Scandal Will Stand Trial in Kansas City

This from National Catholic Reporter’s Joshua McElwee, Judge orders Kansas City bishop to stand trial in abuse case — “The first criminal case against a sitting U.S. bishop in the decades-long clergy sex abuse crisis will go forward after a county judge’s decision Thursday that Bishop Robert Finn, head of the Kansas City-St. Joseph diocese, must stand trial on charges of failing to report suspected child abuse.”

I hope that this judicial decision will continue weaken the hierarchy’s spurious claims that it is subject to rules different from everyone else in society—clericalism in its full expression. Now the court will decide if Bishop Finn failed the mandatory reporting requirement, as it should be.
